Phase-by-Phase Breakdown

The total time from initial contact to WPQ in hand involves several phases — some controlled by WeldCertTest, some controlled by you. Understanding where each phase falls helps you plan realistic timelines for project deadlines and compliance requirements.

Quote & WPS
Same Day
Call or submit the contact form. We confirm the test required, provide a qualified WPS, and quote pricing. For most standard plate and pipe qualifications this happens same business day. Call (404) 860-1288 for fastest response — don't wait on email if you're on a tight schedule.
Plate Prep & Welding
Your Timeline
This phase is entirely in your hands. Joint prep, fit-up, tacking, and welding all happen at your facility under the WPS. Factor in your shop schedule, the welder's availability, and any warm-up time needed — especially for re-certifications after a long gap. A rushed test plate that fails costs more time than taking it right the first time.
Shipping Transit
1–5 Days
Varies by carrier and distance from Atlanta, GA. Ground shipping from nearby southeastern states typically arrives in 1 to 2 business days. Cross-country ground can take 4 to 5 business days. Use overnight or 2-day shipping if you're under time pressure. Follow shipping instructions exactly — improper packaging that damages the plate adds significant time. Send us the tracking number when you ship.
Receipt Confirmation
Same Day
We confirm receipt the day the plate arrives. Notify us with your tracking number before shipment so we can watch for it. Receipt triggers the inspection queue — plates with complete, correct documentation go to the front. Missing WPS, unlabeled plates, or incomplete test request forms cause delays at this step.
CWI Visual Inspection
1–2 Days
Our AWS CWI performs full visual inspection per D1.1 Clause 4.9. Every surface, every toe, every inch of the weld is examined against D1.1 acceptance criteria. If the plate passes, it moves immediately to bend testing. If the plate fails, we notify you the same day — you'll know the specific rejection reason so the welder can correct it before the next attempt. We do not proceed to bend testing on a visually rejected plate.
Bend Testing
2–5 Days
Specimens cut, machined, and tested at our accredited laboratory. Four specimens per plate qualification — two face bends, two root bends — each bent 180 degrees in a guided bend jig. Pipe coupons require specimens from specific clock positions per D1.1 Table 6.13. All specimens must pass. We notify you immediately on any failure with the specimen location and failure description.
Radiographic Testing
3–7 Days
RT is not required for most D1.1 plate qualification tests — guided bend testing is the standard method. RT may be specified in certain project quality plans or substituted for bends when the WPS allows. RT turnaround is lab-scheduling dependent and varies more than bend testing. Call us if RT is a requirement for your project.
WPQ Completion
1–2 Days
CWI reviews all test results, signs, and issues the WPQ record. The document lists welder name, process, test position, thickness range qualified, test date, and the inspector's AWS certification number. All information is verified against D1.1 requirements before the document is finalized.
Documentation Delivery
Digital: Same Day
WPQ emailed the same day testing is complete. No waiting for mail when you need documentation for a job starting tomorrow. A physical copy is also mailed — arrives 2 to 5 business days after digital delivery. Both formats provided as standard. Start your continuity log the day the WPQ arrives.

What Slows Things Down

Every delay in the qualification process falls into one of two categories — things WeldCertTest controls, and things you control. Our side of the process runs on a defined schedule. The biggest timeline variables are on the submission side.

Visual Inspection Failure

A plate that fails visual stops the process entirely. You re-weld, re-ship, and start over. This is the single biggest timeline killer — a failed plate adds a full weld-and-ship cycle to total turnaround. Good plate prep eliminates this variable.

Incomplete Documentation

Missing WPS, unlabeled plates, or incomplete test request forms all cause delays at receipt. We cannot begin inspection without a valid WPS. Ship everything required the first time — see shipping instructions.

Large Batch Submissions

Multiple plates submitted simultaneously require sequencing. If you have 10 welders needing qualification, call us before submitting so we can plan the intake and keep you informed on sequence and timing.

RT Lab Scheduling

Radiographic testing turnaround is lab-scheduling dependent and less predictable than bend testing. If RT is required for your project, factor extra time into your planning and call us to discuss current RT lead times before shipping.

What Speeds Things Up

Clean Plate, First Pass

A plate that passes visual inspection on arrival moves to bend testing the same day. The welder's prep quality is the most impactful variable in total turnaround time — everything else is relatively fixed.

Complete Documentation at Shipment

WPS included, plate properly labeled, test request form complete. Plates that arrive complete skip the documentation clarification step and move straight into the inspection queue.

Call Before Shipping

Calling (404) 860-1288 before you ship lets us confirm current volume and set accurate expectations. On slower weeks plates can move faster than the estimates above — we can only tell you when you call.

Expedited Shipping

If you're in the southeastern US, ground shipping arrives in 1 to 2 days anyway. For cross-country submissions, overnight or 2-day shipping can shave 2 to 3 days off total turnaround on the shipping phase alone.

⚠ Hard Project Deadlines: Call us before welding the plate — not after shipping it. If you have a Monday job start and it's Thursday, we need to know that before the plate is in a box. We'll tell you what's realistically possible given current volume. Planning ahead is always more effective than rushing.

What to Include When You Ship

Complete submissions move through our process fastest. Missing any of these items causes a documentation hold that adds business days to your turnaround.

  • Completed test plate or pipe coupon — properly prepared per WPS
  • Welder name and contact information clearly labeled on the plate
  • Copy of the WPS used for welding
  • Test request form (we provide this with your WPS)
  • Tracking number emailed or texted to us before or at time of shipment
  • Process and position noted if not on the test request form

See the full shipping instructions page for packaging requirements, carrier recommendations, and what to do if you're submitting multiple plates in one shipment.

✓ Digital WPQ Same Day as Pass: When testing is complete and everything passes, the WPQ is emailed the same day. You do not need to wait for physical mail to start the continuity log or submit documentation to a project QC manager.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does welder qualification take from plate receipt to WPQ?
From the day WeldCertTest receives the plate, typical turnaround is 4 to 10 business days — 1 to 2 days for CWI visual inspection, 2 to 5 days for bend testing if the plate passes visual, and 1 to 2 days for WPQ completion and delivery. The WPQ is emailed the same day testing is complete.
What is the fastest possible turnaround?
Call (404) 860-1288 before shipping to ask about current volume. On lighter weeks plates can move faster than the published estimates. A plate that arrives complete with all documentation, passes visual inspection on arrival, and moves straight to bend testing can result in a WPQ in as few as 3 to 4 business days from receipt. Expedited shipping on your end reduces the transit phase.
What happens if the plate fails visual inspection?
We notify you the same day with the specific rejection reason per D1.1 Clause 4.9. We do not proceed to bend testing on a visually rejected plate. The welder must re-weld a fresh plate and re-ship — this adds the full weld-and-ship cycle to your total timeline. Visual failures are the biggest single cause of timeline extension.
Does the WPQ come by email or mail?
Both. The WPQ is emailed the same day testing is complete — you do not need to wait for a physical copy to begin using the documentation for project compliance. A physical copy is also mailed and arrives 2 to 5 business days after email delivery. Both are provided as standard with every qualification.
How do I handle a hard project deadline?
Call us before welding the plate — not after shipping. If there is a hard deadline, we need to know before the plate is in transit so we can assess whether the timeline is realistic given current volume. We'll give you an honest answer. Planning ahead is always more effective than hoping for a rush.
Does radiographic testing take longer than bend testing?
Yes. RT turnaround is 3 to 7 business days compared to 2 to 5 for bend testing. RT is lab-scheduling dependent and less predictable. Most D1.1 plate qualification tests use guided bend testing as the standard method — RT is not required unless specified by the project quality plan or WPS. If RT is required for your project, call us to discuss current RT lead times before shipping.
How long does shipping take from different parts of the country?
WeldCertTest is in Atlanta, GA. Southeastern states typically see 1 to 2 business day ground transit. Midwest and central states run 2 to 3 days. West Coast ground transit is 4 to 5 business days. If you're shipping from the West Coast and timeline matters, 2-day air shipping can save 2 to 3 days on the transit phase alone.
Can you handle multiple welders at once?
Yes. Call before submitting multiple plates simultaneously so we can plan intake and provide accurate sequencing and timing. Large batch submissions require coordination — plates that arrive without advance notice join the queue in order of receipt. For 5 or more welders, advance coordination gets everyone through faster.
