Common Questions Before You Call

How much does welder qualification testing cost?
Pricing depends on the code, number of test plates, and number of welders. Call or email with your specifics and we'll give you a straight number. We don't post prices online because requirements vary — a single 3G/4G test is different from qualifying five welders under ASME IX across multiple processes.
How long does it take to get results?
Typically 5–10 business days from when your coupon arrives at our facility. Rush processing is available if you have a hard project start date — mention it when you contact us and we'll see what we can do. See our full timeframes page for more detail.
Do you need to watch my welder run the test?
No. AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, API 1104, and the other codes we test under do not require the examiner to witness the welding. Your welder runs the coupon at your facility under your approved WPS and ships it to us. We handle everything from there.
What if my welder fails the test?
We document the failure with full results so you understand exactly what went wrong — visual rejection, bend failure, which specimen. Most codes allow an immediate retest under specific conditions. Call us when you get the results and we'll walk through next steps. Failure documentation is included at no extra charge.
Do you provide the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)?
No — the WPS must come from your company or the project engineer. We test the welder's ability to execute a weld per your WPS. If you don't have a qualified WPS for the position and process you need, that's a separate step before qualification testing. Call us and we can point you in the right direction.
How do I ship my test coupon to you?
Any carrier works — UPS, FedEx, freight for heavy shipments. Package the coupon securely in a rigid box or wooden crate so it arrives undamaged. Mark each plate permanently with welder ID, date, position, process, and base metal. Include the Test Request Form, copy of the WPS, and contact info in a sealed plastic bag inside the package. See our complete shipping guide for packaging instructions specific to plate vs. pipe coupons.
What information should I have ready when I call for a quote?
Have the following ready: (1) governing code (AWS D1.1, ASME IX, API 1104, AWWA, D1.6, D1.3, or D1.7), (2) test position (1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 3G/4G, 5G, 6G, or 6GR), (3) welding process(es) — SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, or combination, (4) base metal grade and thickness or pipe diameter and schedule, (5) number of welders, and (6) whether this is initial qualification or re-certification. Having a copy of your WPS handy speeds the call significantly.
Where is the WeldCertTest testing facility located?
WeldCertTest is operated by Xenogenesis, LLC at 1825 Lockeway Drive Suite 206, Alpharetta, GA 30004 (metro Atlanta). All CWI visual inspection is performed by Timothy Dodd, AWS CWI #00120381, at this location. Bend testing is performed at an accredited laboratory. WeldCertTest is primarily a mail-in service — customers ship coupons from anywhere in the United States. Walk-in drop-off is possible by prior arrangement.
Can you qualify multiple welders at the same time?
Yes — multi-welder batches are a strength of the mail-in model. The entire crew can weld their plates the same week and ship together. For batches of five or more welders, call ahead so sequencing can be planned and accurate batch timing provided. Batches of 10 or more welders should be coordinated 1 to 2 weeks in advance for best turnaround. Multi-welder submissions typically receive better per-welder pricing.
Does WeldCertTest issue WPQ records or AWS Certified Welder cards?
WeldCertTest issues official WPQ (Welder Performance Qualification) records — the code-required documentation under AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, API 1104, AWWA, and other welding codes. WeldCertTest does not issue AWS Certified Welder cards, because that is a separate AWS-administered credential (the AWS QC7 program) issued only through Accredited Testing Facilities. The WPQ is what virtually all welding projects actually require for compliance — not the AWS card. Read the full WPQ vs AWS Certified Welder breakdown →
